The Treadwell name has been a part of boating since Hale Treadwell started Treadwell Boats and Motors in1934 behind his home in a small garage at Elgin Illinois located in the beautiful Fox River Valley. He offered the public a complete line of Evinrude Outboards, Century and Thompson Boats. This was a part time operation as Hale’s primary job was riding a motorcycle for the Kane County Sheriffs Department in the capacity of Constable. In the late 1930’s Hale decided to make the boating business his full time job, and moved it north to the Village of Algonquin where he operated a marina located along the east shore of the Fox River with the help of his wife Ruth and son Bill. As recreational boating grew so did the needs of the marina, so land was purchased on the west shore of the Fox and in 1948 a larger and now full service marina was open for business. In 1960 construction on the locks at McHenry were completed and this now gave the boating public the ability to travel from Algonquin through the Chain O’ Lakes and on to the Wisconsin border. As the new marina grew so did the Treadwell Boats and Motors family. Besides Hale’s son Bill, other family members over time became familiar faces at the marina, Bills wife Rosalie and their three sons Billy, David and Stephen. They strived to continue building an outstanding reputation for honest and reliable sales and service. In 1984 Hale called it a day and the marina was sold. In the fall of 1986 grandson Stephen started Treadwell’s Convenient Marine Service. Not in a garage as his grandfather before him but in the back of a Buick StationWagon. As the business has grown and expanded, Treadwell’s CMS has continued to build on those principals begun in that garage so many years before, “Outstanding - Honest and Reliable Service”. And now after 24 years Treadwell’s CMS has come full circle with the addition of a full service shop located a block from the Fox River next to Kiefs Reef in Burtons Bridge.
